Teleworking

As state employees shifted to remote working, the California Government Operations Agency (GovOps) compiled an online resource to further help state departments make telework as successful as possible. This page will be kept updated, coordinating closely with GovOps Agency as they generate additional resources.

Initially, the goal of remote work was to keep employees safe from the COVID-19 virus and reduce its spread. Although the adjustment has not been easy for all of us, we’ve continued to serve Californians and have started to see the benefits of remote work and its potential for the future.

Already, remote work has resulted in:

  • Greater flexibility for employees
  • Increased productivity in some areas
  • Bolstering our resiliency and improved our capacity for continuity of operations in the event of an emergency.
  • Reduced the state government’s carbon footprint by reducing employee commutes.
  • Departments rethinking their need for real estate and discussing how to consolidate office space to reduce lease costs.

In addition, we anticipate that the option to work remotely will help improve employee retention, make the state more appealing to job applicants, and increase the size of the state’s recruiting pool.

The Newsom Administration is embracing remote work as part of a new model for how we work, even after the COVID-19 crisis has receded.  We want everyone’s telework experience to be as successful as possible, and we will continue to work to build upon what we’re learning now to ensure we lay a great foundation for our future workforce and workplace.
